Welcome Letter from Destiny
Welcome to Tulsa! Whether you’re visiting our beautiful city for the first time or running the same streets you train on each week, we hope you’ll see Tulsa in a whole new light on race day. This year, we’ve got a few extra tricks up our sleeve to make this year’s Williams Route 66 Marathon presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma even more special.
In case you haven’t heard, we’ve got a brand new course to show off! After nearly three years of construction, Gathering Place, Tulsa’s $465-million, 66.5-acre park (the largest park gift in U.S. history!), is complete! Our new course will take participants in the marathon, half marathon, and marathon relay down Riverside Drive and right through the new park, our city’s crown jewel. Runners and walkers will navigate the brand new tunnels through the land bridges on Riverside Drive, making our course flatter than in years past. Don’t worry, though — those of you who have come to know and love the popular “Cheers on Cincinnati” block party (and Jell-O shots) that has greeted participants in years past will still be invited to the party, this time on Woodward Drive. Some things are too good to change!
Another exciting addition to our race this year is the new spectator party at 6th and Peoria. Held at Centennial Park, spectators will be setting up tents and bringing the party atmosphere to the later miles of the marathon when you need it the most! You’ll pass by the party near miles 14 and 24, so get ready to experience our famous Tulsa hospitality.
In addition to the fantastic crowd support you’ve come to know and love at the Williams Route 66 Marathon, we know you’re also expecting an epic finisher’s medal! We’re pretty sure you won’t be disappointed when you cross the finish line and receive the “Goddess of Victory,” a fitting prize to celebrate your outstanding achievement! This year’s goddess is the last in our “Goddess of the Road” series, so make sure you display her with pride when you get back home! All of our finisher medals spin on their bases as a final send off to our lovely goddesses. We can’t wait to show you what we come up with for next year!
I know you’re going to have a blast while you’re rocking the Route, and that’s thanks to the tireless efforts of our Board of Directors and the 2,000 volunteers who make race weekend possible! We work hard all year to make sure that race weekend exceeds all of your expectations. An event of this scale requires the dedication and hard work of thousands of volunteers, so please make sure you thank them when you see them! We have the best volunteers, and we know you’ll agree when you meet them!
I also have to thank you, our participants, for making race weekend the best weekend of the year! In this, my first year as Executive Director, I have been awed by your accomplishments and inspired by your dedication. Our founder and my mentor, Chris Lieberman, believed in creating a race day atmosphere that welcomed every participant, no matter their speed, distance, or goals, and that vision drives us to this day! We hope you’ll love every step of race weekend. Thank you for coming!
