Due to tremendous growth in the Williams Route 66 Marathon race-day events, the board of directors of the Tulsa Route 66 Marathon Inc. have announced the move of the 5k and one-mile fun run races to occur on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, the day prior to the regularly-scheduled 2011 Williams Route 66 Marathon on Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011.
Last year, 9,000 people participated in the race-day events making for an incredible turnout and atmosphere, but with more than 12,000 participants projected for this year, directors want to minimize congestion so all participants can enjoy a pleasant race-day experience.
“I feel like our board has done a great job in managing such a rapidly growing event,” said Chris Lieberman, executive director of Tulsa Route 66 Marathon Inc. “But to accommodate our growth without sacrificing the quality of any of the races, we felt it was time to split the event up over two days.”
The 5k run and walk starts at 8 a.m. with the one-mile fun run and walk beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. Then, on Sunday, the marathon and half-marathon and marathon relay races will again enlist a corral system with the first wave of racers beginning at 8 a.m.
Kids age 17 years and younger will receive a special medal designed for young finishers. Kids running in any of the Williams Route 66 Marathon November events will receive this special medal, thanks to St. John Health System. This is the second year St. John provided medals for these young runners.
More details about race weekend events and activities will be posted on the website and shared in future communications as they become available.
